Proton pump inhibitors (PPI) are very potent acid-suppressing drugs that are usually prescribed for people with more severe or persistent GERD. PPI's stop cells in the lining of the stomach from making too much acid. This can help prevent ulcer formation and facilitates healing.
Proton pump inhibitors are used for treating GERD, erosive esophagitis, stomach and duodenal ulcers, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. They may be prescribed alone, or in combination with antacids. PPIs are also used in combination with antibiotics when treating Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection, which is thought contribute to recurring stomach ulcers.
