Richard Louv first coined the phrase “nature-deficit disorder” in his book Last Child in the Woods in 2005. In it, Louv links children’s attention problems to a decrease in the amount of time spent in nature. According to Louv, children who have access to nature (even if that consists of little more than an empty lot near their house) are more observant, calm and creative than children without such access. Nature also fosters exercise, cognitive restoration and a healthy alternative to video games.
