Melancholic Depression

Written by sshowalter.

Melancholic Depression is a sub-set of major depression that is characterized by the following symptoms:

  • The inability to find pleasure in any positive activities
  • Weight loss, often severe
  • Psychomotor agitation or retardation
  • Insomnia
  • Guilt

This form of depression is particularly sever as nothing can seem to take the sufferer out of his/her depressed state. Antidepressants and supportive forms of psychotherapy have been the traditional methods used to treat melancholic depression.
