Melancholic Depression is a sub-set of major depression that is characterized by the following symptoms:
- The inability to find pleasure in any positive activities
- Weight loss, often severe
- Psychomotor agitation or retardation
- Insomnia
- Guilt
This form of depression is particularly sever as nothing can seem to take the sufferer out of his/her depressed state. Antidepressants and supportive forms of psychotherapy have been the traditional methods used to treat melancholic depression.
