Buteyko Breathing Reconditioning Technique is a shallow breathing technique created by Konstantin Pavlovich Buteyko, Ph.D and used in the treatment of asthmatics. Butekyo's theory is that when asthmatics hyperventilate, they lower their carbon dioxide levels which causes blood vessles to spasm and deprives the tissues of oxygen.1 It is therefore beneficial to train persons suffering from asthma to breath shallowly instead of deeply to avoid an attack.
