You're right that this sounds risky - it is a surgical procedure, and surgical procedures should never be pursued lightly. They should be reserved as a last (if ever) resort to helping/diagnosing an issue. There are so many other treatment options that are less invasive!
I am not an expert so can't comment on what the recovery time is for people who get infections at the site of the extraction, but who would want to go through that for any amount of time!
