Safety is always the first concern with any surgical procedure. The recent study that stated that "toxic amounts of a local anesthetic are a hazard." With liposuction it is important to keep tumescent anesthesia lidocaine low, below 35 mg. Of course the recent deaths in Maryland had to do with the facility. Procedures should be performed at an accredited facility. A 2008 study found that danger of emboli forming could be correlated with the amount of fat removed (Ann Plast Surg. 2008 Jun;60(6):604-8). Therefore the amount of fat removed should be limited. What we are really talking about is the knowledge and skill of the surgeon.
